Empathy is something that is essential to be a great leader, teacher or person, but what does it take to have the BEST form of empathy. In this video and blog, John shares 4 stages of empathy, and challenges us all to have the BEST empathy by have the highest levels of support while lowering our high expectations.
4 Steps to the BEST Empathy
No Sympathy - No feeling of pity at all.
Sympathy - Pity and sorrow that offers little to no support and ultimately lowers expectations
Empathy - Walking through the pain with the person or stepping into their shoes or emotions. This is good, but if it lowers expectations or releases people from their moral imperative or expectations for performance, it is no good.
BEST Empathy - Witness their struggle and responding to it with high levels of support to ensure not only we meet their emotional needs but we also help them meet their needs to continue to perform at high levels.
The BEST Empathy make Us Part of their Journey
When we have the best empathy, we participate with people to help them overcome their struggle by helping them with their tasks and actions they were performing before the struggle. We don't just witness their pain and feel their pain, we respond to their pain.
