3 Goals Every Classroom Needs
Without a goal, you have nowhere to go. Think about it. Without a destination, you have no vacation. Without a desired restaurant, you have no meal. So it goes without saying, if you don't have a goal, you don't have a desired outcome you will reach, and that will ultimately lead to an unfulfilled life.
In your classroom and in your school, kids need to see goals for everything.
Goals for academics
Goals for attendance
Goals for behavior
Goals for extracurricular performance
The reason is simple. Kids need to see the desired number to attendance, performance to execute, or outcome to achieve, and so for today's message, I am giving your 3 types of goals that will help all kids grow.
3 Goals for Every Student
So how to we set goals that get kids going. Here are 3 goals you need for every student in your classroom.
Overarching Goal - This is the end result we want to see. It could be an individual goal for a test or overall performance. This goal sets the big result we want students to strive for.
Skill Goal - Within the overarching goal, students need to know what skills are needed to improve to reach the overall goal. This could a goal for essential skills, fluency, writing performance, etc.
Microgoal - This is the most powerful goal because its so small. In order to reach this goal, students need to set goals for the small behaviors that need to change in order to reach the skill or overarching goal. It could be showing your work, staying engaged, increasing words per minute or number of sentences on an essay, or it could be building stamina in reading.
GO with GOAL SETTING
This week sit down with students and establish the overarching goal, skill goals, and microgoals with them. When you do this, be sure to remind them of these goals daily. This will help them improve in their behavior, their learning, and ultimately, their progress in content mastery.
