How to STOP Drowning in Emails & Meetings
If you're like my educators, you are pressed for time to get your #1 job done, teaching kids or leading adults. And I've been there. When you're overwhelmed with too many demands, and then you have emails piling up and meetings exceeding the alloted time, you are drowning in work and losing at life
What do you do when you're drowning?
The answer is pretty simple. Stop drowning and start swimming.
And to do that, I made the personal decision to cut my email time down by 80%, and I also decided that I would reduce all meeting times to half their current time lengths!
If you're thinking "IT CAN'T BE DONE", read a little further.
What I did was build an email routine to sort my email in 15 minutes at 8 a.m, 12 p.m and 4 p.m. Every email was reviewed, and then archived, replied and archived or added to my tasks and archived. This routine takes me 15 minutes or less when I do it 3 times per day.
Then I spend 15 minutes attacking the emails that became tasks. I never drowned in email again.
MEETINGS
When it comes to meetings, they must end in 30 minutes to an hour. Any longer than that, we are wasting someone's time, and that is a culture kill.
The way I did that was coming up with an agenda with essential items to discuss first with TIME-LIMITS. We made no room for nice to know topics and we eliminate items between 2 people that wasted the time for everyone else in the meeting.
Bottom Line
If we can't get in and out of a meeting in less than an hour, we are not planning it with strategic focus and we don't care about the people who are in the meeting.
