Every teacher wants their kids to grow. Every leader want their school to be the most successful, but did you know that every school that experiences tremendous failure has one thing in common?

The needs of adults come before the needs of kids.

In other words, they consider the comfort of the adults over the challenges kids present.

Now before you stop reading, let me be clear.

I'm not saying that we should ignore the needs of teachers.

Teachers are inundated with initiatives and student challenges, and they feel immense pressure to help all kids grow. Teachers are tired and they need our help and support, but we have to remember this rule when it comes to supporting teachers.

We can meet the needs of kids while simultaneously supporting our teachers.

How do we do this? It's really simple.

BEFORE YOU MAKE A DECISION,

Run It through the Kids First Decsion Matrix

Before we can do what's best for Kids 1st and what's best fro Adults 2nd, we need to evaluate every action by running it through this matrix.

Here's how it works:

If the decision is:

  1. Not good for Kids / Not Good for Adults

    1. Don't do it. It won't do anything except move your school to failure even faster.

  2. Not Good for Kids / Good for Adults

    1. Don't do it. It will make your adults happy, but it will be at the expense of kids. Failure will certainly come in this scenario.

  3. Good for Kids / Not Good for Adults

    1. Revise it. Teachers want to do what's good for kids, but if it is going to overwhelm them, then it won't help kids. Revise the rollout, reduce the cognitive load, or slow down the implementation. If you don't revise it, failure will come

  4. Good for Kids / Good for Adults

    1. Do it. If it's good for kids and good for the adults and it won't create unnecessary stress, then you definitely need to do it.

You can Put Kids 1st without Hurting Teachers

School improvement is not an either / or situation. It's always an 'and' decision. We have to remember that teachers cannot be successful if we overload and overwhelm them with immense initiatives and arduous assignments. They can do more when for kids when we take time to consider how we make what's best for kids align with what's best for teachers at the same time.

You can do it, and if you need help getting your school to be focused on

Kids First / Adults Second, contact us. We can help.
